“Why are you going to the Student Center? Don’t you have class?” Knox asks, as we walk down the hall of the main campus. He’s done for the day, but I’ve still got one more to go before the weekend begins.

It hasn’t been a terrible first week. I’m actually enjoying most of my classes, even Ethics. The topic this week has been interesting, and today, Professor Mears is opening up class discussion.

There’s a fight tonight, but I’m not on the schedule until next week, so I’m heading to Redwood tonight to pick up the contract Dad wants me to go over and then grabbing some things for Marni.

“Getting a coffee. See ya at the house.” I give him a pat on the back and turn into the Student Center.

She’s there. Same spot, every single day. Harper is very predictable.

I’ve been cutting her some slack, but, apparently, she seems to think that it’s just the calm before the storm. It’s like she’s mentally questioning every move I make. I thought about everything she said last week, and while I still feel the sting of what she did to me, I might hate her a tad less.

Leaning over her shoulder, I immediately sense her unease, as her shoulders draw back. “Ahh, Wuthering Heights again. I’m surprised. You’ve been reading that one all week.”

“I’ve been distracted.”

Grabbing a chair, I spin it around next to her and sit down with my legs around the backseat. “Oh yeah. Who’s distracting you?”

Her head cocks to the side, and she sneers. “Hmm, I wonder.”

“Couldn’t possibly be me. This is the only time I see you. Unless you count Ethics class, where I sit behind you and watch every move you make.” Goosebumps spread like wildfire down her arms. “How does that make you feel? Knowing that I’m watching you, and you can’t see me?”

“As a matter of fact,” she closes her book, “I do see you. Little do you know, I can see every move you make, too—if I wanted to, which I don’t.”

I chuckle. “Oh, you have eyes in the back of your head now?”

“Actually, I have your reflection on the screen of my laptop. I learned something new this week—you do actually smile.”

“We’ve known each other for eleven years, and you’ve just now learned that. Everyone smiles, Adara.”

She shakes her head, her sapphire blues looking back at me, “Not you. Not anymore. At least, I don’t get to see it.”

“Oh, but you have. You just said so yourself. My reflection, remember?”

“It’s not the same. You smile differently these days,” she says, with a sadness in her words.

I’m not sure why she cares how or why I smile, but, apparently, she’s taken notice. I’m a grouchy Son of a Bitch, everyone knows that. It didn’t just start this year. It started when I was born, and the doctor snipped my cock. I’ve been angry ever since.

“What are your plans this weekend?” I ask. Changing the subject to something lighter.

“Actually, I’m going home for the weekend, packing up my entire life and moving it to storage.
